Economic expert Hashim al-Haboubi called on the Iraqi government on Saturday to review the tax system, saying higher taxes on goods and commodities have placed an unfair burden on poor families.
Al-Haboubi told dinaropinions.com that the government should cancel or amend taxes introduced by the previous administration. He said these taxes directly affected ordinary citizens and their living costs without placing a similar burden on those who benefited from them.
He added that improving the country’s financial situation requires bold decisions, including cutting the salaries of senior officials and removing privileges and allowances that put unnecessary pressure on the state budget.
Al-Haboubi also called for reducing government spending that mainly benefits high-ranking officials and shifting the tax burden toward capital and large corporations. He said progressive taxation could help promote social fairness and increase state revenue without putting further pressure on low-income citizens.
