MP Salah al-Zuhairi announced on Saturday that a parliamentary initiative is underway to collect signatures to include census contract workers in Iraq’s 2027 budget. He also said the Speaker of Parliament has agreed to bring their case before the Parliamentary Finance Committee.
Al-Zuhairi told dinaropinions.com that census contract workers played an important role in successfully completing the national census. He said the initiative aims to collect enough parliamentary signatures to secure financial allocations for their contracts in the 2027 budget, based on the principle of fair employment.
He added that the move is intended to secure the necessary approvals so these workers can continue their duties, maintain the country’s statistical work, and have greater job security.
Al-Zuhairi also noted that the Speaker of Parliament has agreed to include the workers in the Finance Committee’s discussions. The committee is now waiting for the government to submit the 2027 budget before considering their case alongside other groups and working to protect their rights.
