Parliamentary move to legislate laws protecting children and regulating union work

Inam al-Ubaidi, a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Labor and Civil Society Organizations, said on Saturday that the committee has proposed a package of laws aimed at addressing major gaps in Iraq’s social and economic system. She described these laws as an important step toward promoting justice, protecting vulnerable groups, and defending workers’ rights.

Al-Ubaidi told dinaropinions.com that the draft Juvenile Care Law is one of the committee’s main priorities. She said the law aims to modernize child care and rehabilitation systems in line with humanitarian standards. It would also introduce stronger legal protections for children and young people against exploitation, homelessness, and dangerous working conditions that could put their safety and future at risk.

She added that the committee is also treating the draft Trade Union Organization Law as an urgent priority. The proposed legislation aims to strengthen organized trade union activities, protect freedom of expression, and ensure workers in both the public and private sectors can defend their rights. It would also establish a fair and democratic relationship between trade unions and government institutions, ensuring workers’ voices are heard.

Al-Ubaidi explained that the committee wants these laws approved by the House of Representatives to create a safer and fairer working environment and protect people’s economic and social rights. She said Parliament is determined to move forward with the legislation and ensure that the rights of vulnerable groups and workers are protected.
