Former Iraqi MP Razzaq al-Haidari has called for broader anti-corruption investigations that focus on government institutions and senior officials who oversee large amounts of public money.
Al-Haidari said there is strong public support, as well as political backing, for ongoing efforts to combat corruption and hold accountable anyone found to have misused or stolen public funds.
According to him, many political groups have publicly supported anti-corruption campaigns, despite continuing accusations that some political actors remain linked to corruption cases. He argued that corruption in Iraq has become deeply rooted within institutions and is often protected by influential political figures and networks.
Al-Haidari stressed that anti-corruption efforts should not be limited to lower-level cases or individual incidents. Instead, he believes investigations should focus on the key positions and institutions that control significant financial resources and government revenues.
He specifically highlighted ministers, directors general, and governors as positions that should receive greater scrutiny because of the large budgets and financial responsibilities under their authority.
Al-Haidari argued that targeting high-level positions and major revenue-generating institutions would be an important step toward addressing what he described as widespread and entrenched corruption across multiple sectors of the state.
His comments come as corruption remains one of the most debated political and economic issues in Iraq, with ongoing calls for stronger accountability, greater transparency, and more effective oversight of public funds.
