A member of Iraq’s Coordination Framework, Zuhair al-Jalabi, has clarified the current situation around choosing the next prime minister.
He said that Nouri al-Maliki is still the main candidate for the position and has not withdrawn his nomination.
Al-Jalabi explained that the Coordination Framework cannot move forward with any new candidate unless al-Maliki officially steps aside. Until that happens, no alternative name can be considered.
He added that the same rule applies to caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. In other words, the process cannot move forward until the current candidate’s status is clearly resolved.
At the same time, discussions are ongoing داخل the political bloc. Earlier, officials revealed that two possible options are being considered to break the deadlock.
Leaders of the Coordination Framework are expected to meet and decide on the next step soon.
In simple terms, the situation is still stuck. No new prime minister can be chosen until the current candidate either confirms or withdraws his position.
