MP Mukhtar al-Moussawi said on Wednesday that internal and external pressure is being used to block the passage of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) law. He stressed that these efforts must not be allowed to delay an important piece of legislation.
Al-Moussawi said the PMF is an official national institution that has made major sacrifices to protect Iraq’s security and stability and played an important role in the battles to liberate the country. He said passing the law is necessary to protect the rights of PMF members and make administrative procedures easier.
He also claimed that pressure from inside and outside Iraq is preventing the law from moving forward, even after it was transferred from the Prime Minister’s office to Parliament and went through lengthy discussions.
Al-Moussawi stressed that the law must be passed during the current parliamentary session because it will provide a clear legal framework for PMF units and their members. He said it is unacceptable for any pressure to stand in the way of its approval.
