Chinese Power Units Due Before Summer at Two Iraqi Stations

Two 125-megawatt combined-cycle power units are being built at the South Baghdad Gas Power Station and the Khor al-Zubair power station. Both units are expected to begin operating before next summer.

Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity said Mohammed Naama al-Tufeili, Undersecretary for Production Affairs, met with representatives of Chinese company Dongfang Electric on Sunday to review progress on the two projects. Officials from the Directorate of Planning and Studies and the Central Electricity Production Directorate also attended the meeting.

The meeting focused on delays in delivering materials and equipment that have been held up in the Strait of Hormuz due to the security situation. These delays have affected the project schedules.

Al-Tufeili stressed the need to resolve the problems, speed up construction, and improve coordination to ensure both projects are completed on time.
