Iraq suspends electricity imports from Jordan until further notice.

The electricity connection between Iraq and Jordan has been suspended until further notice because the two countries disagree over the price of imported electricity.

A source in Anbar province told dinaropinions.com that the Iraqi government suddenly stopped the connection that supplies electricity to western Anbar. The move came after Jordan asked to increase electricity prices following the completion of the remaining project phases.

The source said disagreements between Baghdad and Amman over how the electricity connection should operate led to the suspension. However, Rutba district has now been connected to Iraq’s national power grid through Al-Qaim district, removing the need to import electricity from Jordan.

The source also said relations between Iraq and Jordan are facing tensions that have not been publicly acknowledged. According to the source, these tensions have also affected crude oil exports to Jordan and reduced trade between the two countries, partly due to the Jordanian government’s positions toward Iraq.
