A major solar energy project in Iraq’s Muthanna province is moving ahead after discussions between the Ministry of Electricity and Chinese company PowerChina on the next stages of implementation.

The project involves the construction of a 750-megawatt solar power station, which is expected to strengthen Iraq’s electricity sector and support the country’s efforts to expand renewable energy production.

According to the Ministry of Electricity, the first phase of the project, with a capacity of 250 megawatts, is scheduled to enter service before the summer of 2027. Once operational, it will supply power to the national grid and help increase electricity generation capacity.

The meeting focused on technical requirements, implementation plans, and the progress of administrative procedures needed to move the project forward.

Discussions were led by Deputy Minister for Production Affairs Mohammed Noama Al-Tufayli and attended by senior officials from the Investments and Contracts Directorate, the Planning and Studies Directorate, and the Renewable Energy Centre.

The project is part of Iraq’s broader strategy to diversify its energy sources, reduce pressure on traditional power generation, and increase the contribution of clean energy to the national electricity network.
