Iraq has launched the second phase of a project aimed at developing commercial exchange yards at its land border crossings with neighboring countries, as part of broader efforts to boost non-oil revenues and modernize border operations.
According to the Ministry of Transport, the project focuses on improving governance, increasing efficiency, and expanding the use of automation across border facilities.
Murtada Al-Shahmani, Director General of the General Company for Land Transport, said development work has already been completed at the commercial exchange yards in Arar and Shalamcheh. Work is now continuing at the Zurbatiya, Al-Sheeb, Al-Munthiriya, and Rabia’a border crossings.
He explained that the goal is to standardize operations and infrastructure across all border trade yards, creating a unified system for managing commercial activity.
As part of the project, the company has introduced a comprehensive electronic automation system that connects border exchange yards directly with its headquarters in Baghdad. The system allows officials to monitor operations in real time, track workflow, and oversee employee performance through live camera feeds.
The modernization effort also includes automating financial transactions and administrative procedures, which is expected to improve transparency, reduce delays, and strengthen oversight at border crossings.
Officials believe the project will help facilitate trade, improve operational efficiency, and generate additional revenue for the state while supporting Iraq’s broader economic diversification plans.
