MP Ali Saber has outlined several ideas aimed at reducing the influence of American companies in Iraq’s electricity sector, with one of his main proposals focused on expanding the use of solar energy.
Speaking on the issue, Saber said one suggested measure is to increase customs tariffs related to imported solar energy systems and their components. He believes changes in customs policies could help reshape the local energy market and encourage greater investment in alternative power sources.
According to Saber, wider support for solar energy would make these systems more accessible to citizens and encourage more households and businesses to adopt them. He said this would help create a stronger local market for renewable energy solutions.
He also stressed that expanding solar energy projects could reduce pressure on Iraq’s national electricity grid, especially during periods of high demand. In addition, greater reliance on solar power would provide citizens with alternative energy options and lessen the country’s dependence on foreign companies operating in the electricity sector.
Saber believes that investing in renewable energy is one of the practical steps Iraq can take to strengthen its energy independence while helping address ongoing electricity challenges.
