The Diyala Council announced on Saturday the formation of a special committee to inspect soil erosion near the concrete Hamrin Bridge and assess whether it poses any danger to vehicle traffic.

Diyala Council Chairman Omar al-Karawi said the council responded quickly after videos and reports spread on social media showing erosion and soil collapse near the entrance of the bridge.

He explained that the problem was caused by rising water levels in Hamrin Lake, which reached full capacity several weeks ago.

Al-Karawi said the council formed a field committee in coordination with the Roads and Bridges Department to inspect the area and submit an urgent report within less than 24 hours.

The report is expected to include recommendations and emergency solutions, which could lead to further action, including coordination with the Ministry of Housing and Construction if necessary.

He stressed that the Hamrin Bridge is a vital route for residents in the Hamrin Basin area, as it connects citizens traveling toward Baquba and other cities in Diyala province.

According to Al-Karawi, the real impact of the soil erosion and the level of danger to the bridge cannot be fully determined until the field inspection report is completed, after which officials will decide what measures need to be taken.
