Iraq has signed a major agreement with GE to strengthen the country’s electricity sector and improve long-term energy security. The deal was signed in Washington by Electricity Minister Ali Saad Wahib under the supervision of Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi.
According to the Ministry of Electricity, the agreement includes a nationwide plan to increase power generation, upgrade the transmission network, and improve the overall efficiency of the electricity system.
Key parts of the project include building and expanding power plants using GE’s combined-cycle technology, developing a major power generation project in Al Faw, and increasing generating capacity in several provinces across Iraq.
The agreement also focuses on modernizing the national transmission network through new and upgraded substations. In addition, Iraq will move forward with an electricity connection project with Saudi Arabia using high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology.
Other parts of the plan include advanced control centers, automation of secondary substations, and support for arranging project financing.
The Ministry said the agreement brings together power generation, fuel supply, transmission upgrades, and financing under one coordinated plan. The goal is to provide more reliable electricity, improve efficiency, and help meet Iraq’s growing energy needs.
