Iraq has officially activated a development contract for the Hamrin oil field with U.S.-based HKN Energy during a ceremony attended by Oil Minister Basim Muhammad Khudhair al-Abadi.
The project is aimed at significantly increasing production from the field, with plans to reach a peak output of 140,000 barrels of oil per day. In addition to oil production, the field is expected to produce around 40 million standard cubic feet of natural gas per day.
A key part of the project is the planned use of the associated gas. Rather than flaring the gas, which is a common practice in many oil fields, the gas will be utilized to support operations and meet energy requirements within the field itself.
According to the Ministry of Oil, any surplus gas will be reinjected into the reservoir to help maintain pressure levels and improve long-term production efficiency.
The development of the Hamrin field is part of Iraq’s broader efforts to increase oil output, make better use of natural gas resources, and reduce gas flaring. Officials view the project as an important step toward improving energy efficiency and maximizing the value of the country’s natural resources.
Once fully developed, the field is expected to contribute to Iraq’s energy production goals while supporting more sustainable and efficient oil and gas operations.
