Iraqi politician Hashim al-Haboubi has called for corruption cases to be handled as legal matters rather than being used for political attacks and character assassination.
Al-Haboubi said that turning corruption investigations into tools for political rivalry can distract from the real goal of holding corrupt individuals accountable and recovering stolen public funds. He stressed that a person involved in corruption should be held responsible for their own actions and should not automatically represent an entire political party or bloc.
According to al-Haboubi, corruption is not directed by a specific political group but is usually the result of individuals abusing their positions and influence for personal gain. He pointed to the recent al-Jumaili case, saying investigations showed that people from different political backgrounds and affiliations were involved.
He argued that using such cases to target political opponents does not help the political process and can make it harder to identify and prosecute those truly responsible, regardless of their status or party affiliation.
Al-Haboubi also said that political parties generally have broader goals and programs aimed at serving society. For that reason, he believes parties should quickly distance themselves from members found to be involved in corruption in order to protect their reputation and maintain public trust.
He emphasized that fighting corruption requires focusing on the individuals responsible rather than turning every case into a political battle, arguing that this approach would strengthen accountability and improve efforts to combat corruption across the country.
