Iraq’s prime minister-designate says the country could help ease tensions between Iran and the United States.

Ali al-Zaidi made the comments during a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who congratulated him on being chosen to form the new government.

During the call, both sides talked about strengthening relations and agreed to exchange visits in the coming months.

Al-Zaidi stressed that Iraq supports dialogue and peaceful solutions. He said Iraq is in a good position to act as a mediator between Tehran and Washington.

This comes at a tense time.

US President Donald Trump recently announced “Operation Freedom,” aimed at protecting commercial ships stuck in the Strait of Hormuz. He warned that any interference would be met with a strong response.

On the other side, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard warned it would target any foreign forces—especially US troops—if they approached the strait.

Tensions have been high since recent talks between the US and Iran failed to reach an agreement. That conflict lasted around 40 days and caused heavy damage and loss of life.

The situation also led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route that handles about 20% of the world’s oil and gas shipments.

In short, with tensions still high, Iraq is offering to step in and help calm things down.
