Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi met with United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Administrator Abdullah Al-Dardari and his delegation to discuss development projects, economic planning, and support for vulnerable communities in Iraq.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, the meeting focused on several important issues, including funding for development projects, strengthening social protection programs, creating a development fund, and supporting the return of displaced Yazidi families to their homes.
One of the key topics discussed was the possibility of providing residential land to returning Yazidis through the government’s million housing plots project, which aims to improve housing opportunities across the country.
During the meeting, Al-Zaidi emphasized the importance of cooperation between Iraq and United Nations development programs. He revealed that the government is preparing a long-term national development plan that will extend through 2050 and will eventually be presented to Parliament as legislation.
The Prime Minister said one of the main goals of the plan is to complete the million housing plots project in all provinces. He explained that land distribution will be based on population size and poverty levels to ensure a fair allocation of services and development opportunities throughout the country.
For his part, Abdullah Al-Dardari congratulated Al-Zaidi on receiving parliamentary approval for his government and reaffirmed the UNDP’s commitment to supporting Iraq’s development efforts.
He said the organization is ready to assist Iraq in several areas, including helping displaced Yazidis return to their communities, modernizing government institutions, improving public services, and supporting efforts to combat corruption.
The meeting highlighted the ongoing partnership between Iraq and the United Nations as the country works to advance development, strengthen institutions, and improve living conditions for its citizens.
