Iraq-Gulf energy connection to be operational by end of 2024: Electricity Minister

Ziyad Ali Fadhil, Iraq’s Electricity Minister, made the announcement on Saturday that the electricity connection between Iraq and the Gulf will be operational by the end of 2024.

Fadhil confirmed during his visit to the South Baghdad Power Plant that “Iraq’s energy connections with Jordan and Turkiye have already been completed” when he spoke at the launch of three combined cycle power projects in Baghdad, Diyala, and Al-Anbar.

“Toward the finish of 2024, the Bay association will be laid out, and the Saudi one will be the last period of Iraq’s energy association, upgrading Iraq’s energy soundness.”

Notably, Iraq has struggled for a very long time with constant power outages, especially during the sweltering summer months when temperatures can reach 50°C. The nation’s power infrastructure was severely damaged by decades of war and sanctions, resulting in widespread blackouts.

Baghdad is responding by focusing on projects to stabilize its electricity grid through regional interconnection. Basra will receive 500 megawatts from the Gulf interconnection, while a separate link with Saudi Arabia will initially provide 1,000 megawatts. These endeavors are vital, yet Iraq stays dependent on Iranian gas, which has been temperamental, most authorities on the matter would agree.

To expand its energy sources, Iraq has consented to a fundamental arrangement with Turkmenistan to foster 6,000 megawatts of sun based power. Iraq needs a steady production rate of 35 to 40 thousand megawatts despite these efforts to ensure uninterrupted electricity. This highlights the significant job of provincial associations and continuous energy expansion endeavors.
