Iraq has signed a new memorandum of understanding with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) aimed at developing the country’s water sector and improving drinking water services.
The agreement was signed during a ceremony in Istanbul by Ammar Adel Hussein, Director General of the General Directorate of Water, representing Iraq’s Ministry of Construction, Housing and Municipalities.
According to the ministry, the agreement focuses on supporting major water projects across several provinces in central and southern Iraq. The goal is to strengthen drinking water infrastructure, improve service quality, and ensure the long-term sustainability of water supplies for local communities.
Hussein said the new agreement builds on the growing cooperation between Iraq and Japan in the water sector. He noted that previous joint efforts included surveys and data-collection projects designed to assess the condition of water infrastructure and identify the most urgent needs.
The information gathered through those studies is expected to help Iraqi authorities prioritize future projects and direct investments toward areas that need the greatest support.
The agreement reflects ongoing efforts to address water challenges in Iraq, where improving access to reliable and safe drinking water remains a key development priority, particularly in central and southern regions of the country.
