Iraq parliament clarifies Hajj participant numbers amid cabinet vote

The Iraqi Parliament’s Media Office denied rumors circulating on social media about a large number of lawmakers traveling for Hajj this year, confirming that only 29 members of Parliament are taking part in the pilgrimage.

In an official statement released on Friday, May 8, 2026, the office explained that some of the participating MPs are members of the Parliamentary Endowments Committee who were sent on official duties to oversee the condition of Iraqi pilgrims and follow organizational arrangements during the Hajj season.

The statement also clarified that several other lawmakers had originally secured their Hajj spots through Iraq’s national lottery system before they became members of Parliament.

The clarification came after comments from MP Hassan al-Khafaji, who said lawmakers had been instructed to delay their Hajj travel until after the important parliamentary session to vote on the new cabinet. The session is expected early next week and requires at least 183 lawmakers to achieve a legal quorum.

According to the statement, arrangements were made for a final flight carrying MPs after the cabinet vote so they can fulfill both their constitutional responsibilities and religious duties.

The Media Office also urged the public and media organizations to rely on official information and avoid spreading false reports. Parliament is aiming to complete the formation of the new government led by Prime Minister-designate Ali al-Zaidi without further delays. Iraq parliament
