Iraq's Mishraq Sulphur Company Signs Private Sector Partnership

Iraq is moving forward with plans to expand its sulphur industry after the Mishraq Sulphur State Company signed a new partnership agreement with a private Iraqi company to develop a major sulphur production project in Nineveh province.

The project will be built at the Al-Lazzaka 2 field and is expected to produce one million tonnes of refined sulphur per year in its first phase, with the possibility of increasing production in the future.

Ahmed Abdullah Rowdhan, Director General of the company, said the agreement came after the project was offered as an investment opportunity under the Ministry of Industry and Minerals’ plan to revive inactive projects and bring new production fields into operation.

He explained that the project will help reduce Iraq’s reliance on imported sulphur, support local industries that depend on refined sulphur, and create new export opportunities. The project is also expected to generate jobs and strengthen cooperation between the public and private sectors.

The company did not reveal the name of the private Iraqi partner involved in the agreement.

This is the second major partnership signed by the company. The first agreement focused on rehabilitating, operating, and developing a refined sulphur production line at the Mishraq-1 field in Nineveh, which has a production capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per year.

The latest deal reflects Iraq’s efforts to make better use of its natural resources, boost industrial production, and attract more private-sector investment into key industries.
