Summer puts pressure on the electricity sector, and the government is looking to lower electricity prices.

As Baghdad gets ready to announce the ampere price for June, the debate over private generators is heating up again. Citizens and generator owners are arguing over fuel subsidies and rising operating costs.

Ali Al-Zarkani, head of the Oil and Gas Committee in the Baghdad Provincial Council, said the Council of Ministers has decided to provide generators with subsidized kerosene for the next three months as part of the summer plan. Generator owners will receive 40 liters of kerosene per kilowatt at a reduced price of 200 dinars per liter instead of 400 dinars. He added that the Provincial Council is working with the relevant authorities to set the new ampere price soon.

Al-Zarkani also revealed that around 60 percent of generator owners are not officially registered to receive subsidized fuel. According to him, this increases their operating costs and eventually affects the price paid by citizens. He said there are discussions with the federal government about increasing fuel quotas and possibly making them free during the peak summer months.

On the other hand, generator owners say the current support is not enough. They are calling for larger fuel allocations and changes to the distribution system, arguing that the existing quotas do not meet their actual needs. They warn that any shortage directly raises their operating expenses.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Oil says it is continuing efforts to provide subsidized fuel to generators and power stations under the approved system, aiming to help maintain a stable electricity supply during the summer season.
