The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has raised concerns over gas supplies from the Khor Mor field, saying that Crescent Petroleum and Dana Gas started sending natural gas to Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity without its approval.
The KRG said it learned on August 4, 2026, that the companies had already started supplying gas for electricity generation. According to the government, it only received notice at the same time the companies announced the move publicly.
Officials said the KRG has never been against providing gas or electricity to other parts of Iraq. However, they stressed that any such agreement must follow existing contracts and receive approval from the proper authorities.
The KRG also rejected statements from the companies thanking it for supporting the gas supply, saying it did not approve or authorize the decision.
The government explained that it had previously asked for more gas supplies for power facilities where it had invested significant public funds. These projects were intended to increase electricity production for both the Kurdistan Region and the rest of Iraq.
According to the KRG, the operators decided to move forward on their own instead of working together with the government to reach a shared solution.
The KRG said it is now reviewing the legal, contractual, and operational impact of the decision. It added that it will take the necessary steps to protect its contractual rights and defend the energy interests of both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
