Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity has reviewed progress on major combined-cycle power generation projects being developed in four central provinces: Najaf, Karbala, Diwaniyah, and Babil.
During a meeting with representatives of Chinese energy company Shanghai Electric, Electricity Minister Ali Saad Wahib stressed the importance of sticking to agreed project timelines and speeding up construction work. He instructed the company to address any challenges that could delay implementation and ensure progress remains aligned with approved schedules.
The minister also emphasized that the ministry is closely monitoring project completion rates and planned commissioning dates to ensure the new generation capacity is delivered on time.
Shanghai Electric representatives reaffirmed their commitment to accelerating work across all four projects. They noted that special attention would be given to the power stations in Najaf and Karbala due to the large number of religious visitors these provinces receive each year, particularly during major pilgrimages and religious events.
Combined-cycle technology improves power generation efficiency by using waste heat from gas turbines to produce additional electricity, allowing plants to generate more power while using less fuel. The projects are expected to strengthen electricity supply, improve grid stability, and help meet growing energy demand in central Iraq.
Once completed, the stations will add significant generation capacity to the national power system and support the government’s broader efforts to improve electricity services across the country.
