NFT supporters are debating the future of the market on X as several major platforms have closed or reduced their services. Nifty Gateway shut down, Binance ended its centralized NFT marketplace service, and Magic Eden withdrew from Bitcoin and Ethereum-compatible NFT markets while continuing to support Solana.
The changes have raised questions about whether NFTs can regain their former popularity. Some users expressed disappointment over the decline in attention, while others continued to defend NFTs as an important part of crypto communities.
One user, FFV, said the crypto community on X was better when NFTs were in the spotlight. Another user, AKYLLES, called NFTs a cornerstone of the industry. Jayjay said NFTs had changed his life, while Lato asked followers which projects they considered undervalued.
These posts reflected different opinions about the sector, but they did not identify specific collections showing a recovery in sales or announce any new marketplace launches.
Nifty Gateway officially closed on April 23, 2026. The platform’s website says customers can still receive assistance with withdrawing their assets and that NFT metadata and images are expected to remain stored on its servers indefinitely. Gemini, which owned the platform, said the closure would allow it to focus on its planned financial super app. NFT support would still be available through Gemini Wallet.
Binance also changed its approach to NFTs. It ended NFT services through its centralized exchange in July, directing users to move eligible assets to Binance Wallet or another compatible service. Some non-transferable NFTs could not be withdrawn, and Binance said access to those items would end.
Magic Eden announced in February that it would stop supporting Bitcoin and Ethereum-compatible NFT trading. The company continued to support Solana assets, making its decision different from Nifty Gateway’s full closure.
Despite these changes, NFT trading continued across several collections in September.
A September 12 market snapshot recorded $46.78 million in global NFT sales over seven days, an increase of 6.8%. Transactions rose 48.75% to 917,549. Courtyard led individual collections with $6.67 million in sales across 104,404 transactions. Ethereum recorded $16.83 million in blockchain sales, followed by Bitcoin with $9.44 million.
The following week, global NFT sales fell 15.28% to $37.54 million, while transactions declined 9.08% to 808,432. However, Courtyard remained the leading collection, recording $6.3 million in sales across 123,504 transactions. Its transaction count increased by 21.52%, even as its sales value fell slightly.
Other collections also recorded activity. Gaming collection Guild of Guardians Heroes generated $986,168 in sales, while Panini America recorded $893,356. CryptoPunks sales fell 37.39% to $706,667 across nine transactions.
These figures show that NFT activity continued despite the closure or restructuring of major marketplaces. However, trading volumes varied between weeks, and the available figures do not establish whether the broader NFT market is entering a sustained recovery.
