Luqman Hassan, a member of the Kurdish Azadi Movement, said the ongoing problems between Baghdad and Erbil are mainly caused by the Kurdistan Regional Government’s failure to follow the law and constitution. He said these disagreements are becoming more serious as discussions over the budget move closer to a vote.
Speaking to dinaropinions.com, Hassan said officials in the Kurdistan Region have repeatedly failed to respect the constitution, creating further tensions with the federal government in Baghdad.
He also raised concerns about oil activities in the region, including refining, production, exports, the processing of oil products, and smuggling. He said Kurdish lawmakers have also confirmed these activities, while opposition parties have accused the ruling authorities in the region of illegally sending oil abroad.
Hassan said continued violations by the regional government are making the disputes between Baghdad and Erbil worse. He added that ordinary people in the Kurdistan Region are suffering because of the policies of the government and ruling parties. He also questioned the government’s legitimacy, arguing that the region lacks a legitimate administration that properly follows the law and constitution.
