Former Parliamentary Finance Committee member Mohammed Al-Shabaki has criticized Prime Minister Al-Zidi’s government for following the same budget policies as previous governments without developing a clear plan to diversify Iraq’s revenues.
Al-Shabaki told dinaropinions.com that the government continues to focus on appointments, wage increases and confirming contract workers without presenting a clear plan to secure long-term funding for permanent employees’ salaries.
He said this approach shows confusion in the government’s performance, especially given the current regional situation and its possible impact on Iraq’s economy.
Al-Shabaki added that appointments and contract confirmations are being presented as political promises rather than major achievements. He said people had expected the government to find additional sources of income to strengthen the budget, support development, invest in future generations and revive the industrial sector.
He stressed that while employment is a right for citizens, the government should not focus on appointments without first ensuring that it has enough resources to meet its financial commitments.
Al-Shabaki warned that repeating the policies of previous governments was a negative sign. He called on the government to explain how it plans to diversify revenues, secure funding and ensure that employee salaries can be paid in the coming years.
He said these steps are particularly important given the uncertainty in the region and the potential consequences for Iraq’s finances.
