Council of Representatives of Iraq is scheduled to discuss key economic issues on Thursday as part of its review of the government program presented by Prime Minister-designate Ali al-Zaidi.

Iraqi MP Mona Hussein said the parliamentary sessions will include broad discussions on mechanisms for improving Iraq’s economic performance and evaluating progress on financial reforms included in the incoming government’s ministerial agenda.

According to Hussein, lawmakers will focus on urgent strategies aimed at increasing non-oil revenues and reviving dormant productive sectors in order to reduce Iraq’s heavy dependence on oil income.

She said Parliament is seeking to strengthen the country’s ability to withstand future economic shocks and market volatility by diversifying revenue sources and improving financial management.

Hussein also stressed that the current stage requires “practical steps” to redirect Iraq’s economic policy toward tackling financial waste, activating underutilized resources, and supporting long-term financial and economic stability.

The discussions come amid growing concern inside Iraq over fiscal pressures linked to oil-price volatility, export disruptions, rising public spending, and recurring budget deficits. Iraqi officials and economic experts have increasingly called for reforms focused on non-oil sectors, investment expansion, private-sector growth, and reducing inefficiencies in state institutions.
