Iraq’s Parliamentary Finance Committee has begun discussions on the country’s next federal budget, holding a meeting with Finance Minister officials to review the current financial situation and prepare for the 2027 budget draft.
Member of Parliament Mansour al-Baiji said the committee hosted the Finance Minister and senior ministry officials for an extensive discussion focused on the challenges facing Iraq’s economy and the steps needed to address ongoing financial pressures.
According to al-Baiji, the meeting included a detailed review of the country’s financial conditions and explored practical solutions aimed at overcoming current economic difficulties.
A major focus of the discussions was reducing Iraq’s dependence on oil revenues. Officials examined ways to diversify the country’s income sources and increase non-oil revenues to strengthen the state treasury and improve long-term financial stability.
The participants also reviewed preliminary allocations and key indicators for next year’s federal budget. Discussions centered on ensuring that sufficient funding is available for essential public services, citizens’ needs, and priority investment projects.
Al-Baiji noted that the committee and the Ministry of Finance are working to develop a budget framework that balances economic challenges with the government’s development goals, while supporting public spending and infrastructure projects.
The talks come as Iraq continues to face financial pressures linked to fluctuations in global oil markets, making revenue diversification an increasingly important priority for policymakers.
As budget preparations move forward, lawmakers and government officials are expected to continue discussions on spending priorities, revenue generation, and measures aimed at strengthening Iraq’s economic resilience in the years ahead.
