Iraqis are closely watching their phones and ATMs as the end of the month approaches, waiting for news about salary payments. Many employees are preparing their budgets, especially with the upcoming increase in spending before the new school and university year begins.
At the same time, concerns are rising about whether the government can continue paying salaries on time despite the economic challenges affecting the region. However, officials have repeatedly said that employee salaries are secured and will not be affected by the current financial pressures.
Economic expert Dr. Safwan Qusay said the Ministry of Finance is studying several solutions to reduce dependence on domestic borrowing. These plans include using in-kind payments to support contractors, farmers, and private companies that have financial obligations with the ministry.
He explained that settling unpaid taxes and domestic debts owed by companies could provide the government with additional funds and reduce the need to borrow money for salary payments.
Qusay also pointed to the possibility of using existing credit portfolios. Around 57 trillion dinars have been allocated through the Central Bank and other financial institutions for housing projects and small and medium-sized businesses. These funds could be redirected and settled with contractors and farmers, helping reduce pressure on the government budget.
Meanwhile, MP Hassan Shaker said there are no real concerns about salary payments. He confirmed that salaries remain a guaranteed right for employees and that the government must continue providing the necessary financial allocations to maintain regular payments.
Shaker warned that any delay in salaries would directly affect citizens and the wider economy. He emphasized the need for careful financial management and stronger planning to maintain economic stability.
MP Mohammed al-Moussawi said the ongoing delay in completing the cabinet is creating additional challenges during an already difficult economic period. He stated that the country needs a fully functioning government team capable of making important financial decisions.
According to al-Moussawi, salary issues and economic pressures require quick and practical solutions. He called on political groups to resolve disputes over the remaining ministries and complete the cabinet formation process.
He added that completing the government would strengthen its ability to handle economic and service-related challenges and help it meet its responsibilities toward citizens during this critical time.
