XRP Ledger privacy vote targets $530M RWA market

The XRP Ledger is moving closer to adding a new privacy feature designed for institutional transactions, as validators prepare to vote on the Confidential Transfers amendment.

The proposed update would allow users to hide payment amounts and token balances for Multi-Purpose Tokens (MPTs), while keeping account details and the type of asset being transferred visible.

The goal is to give financial institutions more privacy when using blockchain for tokenized assets such as funds, bonds, and other financial products. The system would use cryptographic technology to prove transactions are valid without revealing the exact amounts involved.

The privacy update comes as the XRP Ledger continues to grow in the tokenized asset market. The network currently holds around $1.38 billion in distributed assets, including about $845.7 million of Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin. Excluding RLUSD, more than $530 million in other tokenized assets could potentially benefit from the new privacy feature.

Major projects on the network include assets from companies such as Ondo Finance, VERT Capital, Archax, and Societe Generale. The growth shows that XRPL is expanding beyond testing and moving toward real-world financial use cases.

However, the first version of Confidential Transfers will have some limits. The feature will only support direct MPT payments between accounts and will not cover transactions through the XRP Ledger’s built-in exchange, escrow services, or checks.

The latest XRPL version also includes other proposed upgrades. These include tools that could allow multiple transactions to be processed together, help users pay fees for others, give permission for specific transaction types, and allow issuers to adjust certain token features.

The privacy proposal could become important for institutions using XRPL for tokenized financial products. Earlier tests involving tokenized U.S. Treasury assets showed how blockchain networks could connect with traditional financial systems for faster settlement.

Before the feature can go live, it must receive approval from at least 80% of trusted XRPL validators for two consecutive weeks.

The upcoming vote will determine whether Confidential Transfers become part of the XRP Ledger and whether institutions adopt the privacy tools for future tokenized asset transactions.
