Member of the Parliamentary Finance Committee, Amer Rahim, said that any proposal to remove zeros from Iraq’s currency requires extensive legislative and economic preparation, stressing that discussion of the measure is premature under current conditions.

Rahim explained that such a decision cannot be made quickly and would require lengthy debates within Parliament, along with amendments to existing financial regulations and the passage of supporting legislation to ensure economic and market stability.

He noted that the proposal is closely tied to Iraq’s broader economic environment and banking sector reforms. According to Rahim, the country must first establish a stable financial and economic framework before considering major structural changes to the national currency.

He also warned that implementing the measure without careful planning and comprehensive studies could negatively affect citizens’ purchasing power and create additional economic challenges.

Rahim emphasized that current priorities should focus on strengthening the stability of the Iraqi dinar, advancing banking reforms, and improving the overall economic climate. He said the issue of removing zeros from the currency should be deferred until conditions are more favorable and sufficient legislative support exists within the House of Representatives.
