An Iraqi lawmaker is urging the next prime minister to act fast on a major risk to the country’s economy.
MP Mohammed al-Baldawi said the new government must find alternative ways to export oil, instead of relying heavily on the Strait of Hormuz.
He warned that the current situation in the region—especially rising tensions and the risk of the strait being closed—could directly affect Iraq’s budget.
According to him, the Prime Minister-designate needs a clear plan: diversify income sources, secure new export routes, and protect the country from sudden shocks.
Al-Baldawi stressed that keeping the economy stable should be a top priority. That means creating backup options, like land routes or pipelines, so oil exports can continue even during regional conflicts.
He also cautioned against depending on just one route, especially with ongoing security tensions.
Iraq relies heavily on oil for its income, so any disruption could quickly turn into a serious financial problem. He said the next government will be tested on how well it handles this challenge.
