A former Iraqi lawmaker is warning about serious risks to the country’s economy.
Yasser Al-Husseini said Iraq could be harmed if it follows the policies of former US President Donald Trump and fails to protect its own revenues from corruption.
He pointed out that many countries under pressure still manage to control their economies, especially non-oil income. But in Iraq, he says corruption has weakened those revenues, making them far less useful.
According to him, Iraq is only getting about 2% of its non-oil revenues, which he described as a dangerous situation.
Al-Husseini warned that the country could face an uncertain future—either by following what he called Trump’s policies or by continuing down a path that damages the economy and creates political problems.
He added that, in the end, ordinary citizens will pay the price if public money is not protected and corruption continues.
