Political analyst Haider al-Moussawi criticized the United States for continuing to use Iraqi funds as a way to pressure Baghdad and push it toward political positions that serve American interests.
Al-Moussawi said that in 2004, Washington convinced Iraq to place its funds in an account at the US Federal Reserve, claiming the money would be safer there. However, he argued that the reality has turned out very differently.
According to him, the United States now uses control over these funds as a pressure tool against Iraq. He said Washington frequently threatens to stop the transfer of Iraqi funds and oil revenues held at the Federal Reserve, even though the money belongs to Iraq.
Al-Moussawi said the issue of Iraqi funds has become a political tool used by the US administration to gain concessions and influence Iraqi decisions. He also claimed that Washington uses this pressure to interfere in Iraq’s internal affairs, including matters related to the selection of ministers.
He stressed that Iraqi funds should be returned to Baghdad’s full control and should not be used as leverage by any foreign country.
