Lebanon is taking steps to become a storage and re-export hub for Iraqi crude oil and petroleum products as part of the first phase of a planned transit arrangement between the two countries.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam chaired a meeting on Sunday to review the country’s readiness and discuss the work needed to support the project. Officials focused on logistics, infrastructure, and operational requirements necessary for handling Iraqi oil shipments.
The discussions included plans to rehabilitate roads used by fuel tankers, upgrade border crossings to manage increased traffic, and organize transport routes leading to storage facilities. Officials also reviewed storage capacity, safety measures, and operating procedures to ensure the project can run smoothly.
Several senior government officials attended the meeting, including representatives from the energy, interior, public works, customs, and security sectors.
At the conclusion of the meeting, participants agreed to maintain close coordination among ministries and government agencies to ensure all preparations are completed on schedule. The project is expected to strengthen cooperation between Iraq and Lebanon while improving regional energy logistics and trade.
