Iraq is getting ready to launch a major gas project at the Nahr Bin Omar field by the end of April, according to the Ministry of Oil.

This project is part of a bigger push to make better use of gas that is usually wasted. Instead of flaring it, the plan is to capture and turn it into useful energy.

Once it starts running, the facility will process up to 70 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.

From that, it’s expected to produce:

  • Around 80 million cubic feet of dry gas daily for power generation
  • Between 500 and 600 tonnes of LPG for local use
  • More than 1,800 barrels of condensates each day

The project is being carried out through joint work between the South Gas Company, the State Company for Oil Projects, and the Basra Gas Company.

Officials say this will help in several ways. It should reduce gas flaring, increase local LPG supply, and support electricity production. It also means Iraq can get more value from resources that were previously wasted.

The project is part of a wider plan to improve gas investment, cut down on imports, and strengthen the country’s power sector.

In short, it’s a practical step toward using Iraq’s energy resources more efficiently and boosting local supply.
