Plans for the Al-Tayeb Economic City project in Iraq’s Maysan province have taken another step forward after officials met to review the water infrastructure needed to support the future development.
The meeting was led by National Investment Commission Chairman Adel Dakhil Muhammad Al-Yasiri and focused on evaluating the technical and economic feasibility of water harvesting projects that will play a key role in supplying the planned city.
Representatives from the Prime Minister’s Office, several government ministries, and engineering company KBR attended the discussions. KBR provided a technical assessment of the proposed water management plans and reviewed options for securing long-term water supplies for the project.
One of the main presentations was delivered by Dr. Raed Sai from the Ministry of Higher Education, who outlined the technical vision for the development of Al-Tayeb, Al-Shib, and Ali Al-Gharbi cities.
Officials also discussed the approval granted by the Minister of Water Resources for the construction of a dam on the Tayib River. The project is expected to include a pumping station and a water treatment plant to support future residential, industrial, and commercial needs.
Additional topics included plans for drilling water wells, coordinating designs with Iraq’s broader strategic water resources plans, and exploring ways to manage flood risks while ensuring reliable water distribution throughout the city.
The meeting also reviewed KBR’s advisory report on the feasibility of water harvesting projects, which are expected to be an important part of the city’s long-term water strategy.
Al-Yasiri said the Al-Tayeb Economic City project is receiving direct support and attention from Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani. He added that the National Investment Commission will continue working closely with relevant government agencies to complete the technical requirements needed before formally offering investment opportunities to local and international investors.
The project is part of Iraq’s broader efforts to attract investment, support economic growth, and create new development hubs that can generate jobs and improve infrastructure in different regions of the country.
Once completed, Al-Tayeb Economic City is expected to become an important economic and service center in Maysan province, supported by modern infrastructure and long-term development planning.
