MP Safaa al-Husseini warned on Saturday that Iraq could face another wave of inflation and sharp increases in food and basic commodity prices as the dollar exchange rate continues to fluctuate and rise. He said the Central Bank’s monetary policies have seriously weakened citizens’ purchasing power, especially among low-income families.
Al-Husseini said the sudden rise in the dollar rate was no longer just a problem for currency markets and banks. It was also directly affecting local markets and businesses, making it harder for Iraqi families to afford their daily needs.
He added that the rising dollar rate was disrupting market activity and creating opportunities for speculators. He said ordinary citizens were suffering the most because of financial instability and weak oversight of money flows.
Al-Husseini stressed that Parliament would not ignore the worsening living conditions and rising prices. He called on the Central Bank and relevant government agencies to change their current policies, take urgent action to control the parallel dollar market, and stabilize food prices to protect the livelihoods and food security of Iraqi citizens.
