State of Law Figure Dismisses Possibility of Iraqi PM Breaking Away from Coordination Framework
Jassim Mohammed Jaafar, a prominent member of Iraq’s State of Law Coalition, has dismissed speculation that Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi could distance himself from the Coordination Framework following recent support he received during his visit to Washington.
Speaking on Sunday, Jaafar said that American backing for al-Zaidi should not be interpreted as a sign that the Prime Minister intends to separate himself from the political alliance that helped bring him to power.
According to Jaafar, previous Iraqi prime ministers were also subjected to pressure from the United States in an effort to encourage them to move away from the Coordination Framework and adopt positions opposed to Iran. However, he said those efforts were unsuccessful.
He stressed that as long as Prime Minister al-Zaidi continues to respect the decisions and political direction of the Coordination Framework, relations between both sides are expected to remain stable.
Jaafar also warned that any attempt by the Prime Minister to challenge or break away from the framework could create significant political difficulties. He noted that the alliance holds a strong parliamentary majority and possesses the constitutional ability to withdraw confidence from the government if necessary.
Despite these warnings, Jaafar described such a scenario as highly unlikely, stating that he does not expect al-Zaidi to take steps that would place him in conflict with the coalition.
He added that many details surrounding al-Zaidi’s recent visit to Washington remain unclear, including the nature of agreements and memorandums reportedly discussed during the trip.
According to Jaafar, the Iraqi Parliament has formally requested clarification from the Prime Minister regarding the contents of the agreements and understandings reached in Washington. Lawmakers are seeking greater transparency about the commitments made during the visit and their potential impact on Iraq’s political and economic future.
The remarks reflect ongoing political debate in Iraq over the significance of al-Zaidi’s meetings in the United States and whether the visit could influence the country’s internal political balance or foreign policy direction.
