Former parliamentary finance committee member Mu’in al-Kadhimi criticized reports that the US halted dollar shipments to Iraq, calling the move “political blackmail” and interference in Iraq’s internal affairs.
He said tying financial flows to political developments or government formation would be a serious issue, arguing it could put pressure on Iraq’s economy and affect citizens.
Al-Kadhimi also said Iraq should look at strengthening monetary alternatives and reducing dependence on outside financial restrictions over time.
His comments came after reports, citing Iraqi and US officials, said dollar shipments had been suspended until a new government is formed.
The issue has added to debate over financial sovereignty and how much control Iraq has over critical monetary channels.
In simple terms, al-Kadhimi’s message was that financial tools should not be used as political leverage, and Iraq should work toward greater economic independence.
