Iraqi lawmaker warns new Information Access Bill is "rigged" and "restrictive"

Noor Nafi, a member of the Iraqi parliament, issued a clear warning on Monday regarding the proposed Right of Access to Information Law, describing it as “rigged” and excessively restrictive.

Nafi, an individual from the parliamentary Culture and Media Panel, censured the draft regulation as containing “various imperatives that could hamper columnists, activists, and those engaged with political issues.

“The draft of regulation shipped off Parliament is weighed down with limitations that limit the opportunity of writers and activists,” Nafi told Shafaq News, adding that “the panel is chipping away at altering a few arrangements to serve the public interest better and eliminate the constraints forced on media experts.”

The legislator communicated solid resistance to passing the bill in its ongoing structure, accentuating the requirement for updates to adjust the law to the Iraqi Constitution and guarantee it upholds as opposed to upsets crafted by writers and data searchers.

In February, the Iraqi Parliament finished the main perusing of the Right of Admittance to Data Regulation. The bill was recently endorsed by the Iraqi Bureau on October 4, 2023, and sent to Parliament for additional thought.

Last week, Al-Nakheel Place for Press Privileges and Opportunities encouraged the Place of Delegates to include a section press and reporting to One side to Admittance to Data Regulation, stressing columnists’ mastery in dealing with data.

Because of the consideration of the Option to Admittance to Data Regulation on the Place of Delegates plan next Sunday, the Middle let Shafaq News Organization know that “the press is critical for the House’s oversight job. Without composed ensures for writers in this regulation, the authoritative power will lose critical oversight power.”

“Restricting journalists’ access to information undermines media control, a crucial pillar of any free democratic system,” the Center also stated.
