Former member of Iraq’s Parliamentary Committee on Economy and Investment, Yasser al-Husseini, said Iraq’s policies have allowed the United States to increase its influence over the country and place growing pressure on its economy.

Speaking about the issue, al-Husseini argued that decisions made by Baghdad have given Washington significant control over important areas of the Iraqi economy. He said this has enabled the U.S. to exert financial pressure while protecting its own interests.

According to al-Husseini, American influence can be seen in several key sectors, especially electricity. He claimed that Iraq has shown excessive compliance with U.S. policies in this area, which has limited the country’s ability to make independent decisions. He also pointed to the agriculture and industrial sectors, saying they have been affected by American influence as well.

Al-Husseini said many of the challenges facing Iraq remain unresolved. In his view, the country’s economic problems have been made worse by a combination of external pressures and internal issues.

He stressed that corruption, delayed projects, weak revenue generation, and ongoing management problems have all contributed to Iraq’s financial difficulties. These factors, he said, have increased pressure on the government’s budget and made it harder to address long-standing economic challenges.

Al-Husseini believes that without effective solutions and stronger economic policies, Iraq will continue to face financial strain and remain vulnerable to outside influence in key sectors of the economy.
